Press Release - Coptic Orthodox Archdiocese of N. A. 12/29/2017

By Mark - Posted on 31 December 2017

As worshippers gathered at St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church in a south Cairo suburb in Egypt, two gunmen opened fire killing at least 6 Coptic Christians and 1 police officer. Shortly before this attack, another related incident took place at a Coptic owned store in the same neighborhood of the Helwan district leaving the two Christian owners dead. This most recent attack comes in the wake of last week’s attack on a Church in Giza where hundreds of Muslim demonstrators stormed a church, wounding three people, and demanding the demolition of the Church.
During a season when people all over the world are celebrating the birth of Christ, while at the same time looking forward to the New Year, we pray for peace in Egypt and goodwill to all of humanity throughout the world. On behalf of the faithful of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Archdiocese of North America extends our heartfelt sympathies and prayers for the victims, the injured, the families, and the first responders. We are grateful to God for His continued presence guarding the Church and for the police officers who have sacrificed their lives to protect their fellow countrymen.

May God extend comfort for the families of the victims, healing for the injured, and wisdom for those who govern.
